Solar watches:
infinite energy, no batteries

Never change a battery. Never wind. Just light. We explain why solar watches are the future of practical watchmaking.

☀️ What is a solar watch?

A solar watch is a quartz watch powered by light (natural or artificial). It has a built-in photovoltaic cell under the dial that converts any light source into electrical energy. That energy is stored in a rechargeable battery that can last months without seeing light.

🌞 The big difference from a regular quartz:
A regular quartz uses a disposable battery that lasts 2-3 years and then needs replacement. A solar watch has a rechargeable battery that you never need to change. It recharges with any light: sun, lamps, office light. And once charged, it can run for 6-12 months in total darkness.

Does the battery wear out? Solar batteries are designed to last 10-20 years before losing capacity. And when that happens, a watchmaker can replace it. Not like a disposable battery you throw away every few years.

✅ Why fall in love with a solar watch

1. Never change a battery

Literally. The rechargeable battery lasts for years and years. Goodbye to trips to the watchmaker for a dead battery.

2. Environmentally friendly

Fewer disposable batteries in landfills. One solar watch avoids dozens of batteries over its lifetime.

3. Always ready

Left it in a dark drawer for months? Take it out, give it light for a few seconds, and it comes back to life. No winding needed.

4. Quartz accuracy

Inherits incredible quartz precision: ±15 seconds per month. You'll never think about adjusting it.

5. Works with any light

You don't need direct sun. A desk lamp, ceiling light, even a flashlight will recharge it.

6. Long power reserve

Most have between 6 and 12 months of reserve. You can store it for half a year and it will still be running.

🛑 Solar watch myths (and why they're false)

❌ "They need direct sun all day"

False. Ambient room light is enough. Direct sun only speeds up charging, but isn't necessary.

❌ "They break if left in darkness"

False. They enter "sleep mode" to save energy. When they see light again, they reactivate automatically.

❌ "The solar battery can't be replaced"

Yes it can. It's designed to last 10-20 years, but when it degrades, a watchmaker can replace it.

❌ "They're more expensive"

Not necessarily. There are solar models from €100-150. The savings on batteries make up the difference long-term.

🔍 How to choose your solar watch

📏 1. Case size

Slim wrist (14-16cm): 36-40mm • Standard (16-18cm): 40-44mm • Large (>18cm): 44-48mm

💧 2. Water resistance

50m/5ATM: splashes, rain • 100m/10ATM: swimming, snorkeling • 200m+: recreational diving

🔮 3. Crystal type

Sapphire: best, almost scratch-proof • Mineral: standard, scratches over time • Sapphire is a great investment to protect the solar cell.

🎀 4. Strap or bracelet

Steel: most durable • Rubber/silicone: sporty, water-resistant • NATO: comfortable, breathable • Titanium: ultra-light, hypoallergenic.

🔋 5. Power reserve

Most solar watches offer 6-12 months of autonomy. If you have a collection or travel often, look for at least 10 months.

📊 6. Charge indicator

Many solar watches include a battery level indicator. Very useful to know when it needs light.

🏆 7. Brands and technologies

Citizen Eco-Drive: most famous • Seiko Solar: excellent value • Casio Tough Solar: indestructible • G-Shock Solar: ultimate ruggedness with solar.

🛠️ Basic care (very few)

✅ Give it light occasionally

If you don't use it for months, leave it near a window or under a lamp for a day. It will stay charged.

✅ Don't leave it in total darkness for years

If stored in a dark drawer for over a year, it may fully discharge. It won't break, but will take longer to reactivate.

✅ Exterior cleaning

Soft microfiber cloth. For steel bracelets, mild soap and water. The dial must be clean for light to reach the cell.

✅ Avoid extreme temperatures

Don't leave it in direct sun inside a closed car. Extreme heat can damage the battery.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How long does a solar watch take to charge?

Office light: 10-20 hours for full charge. Direct sun: 2-5 hours. But with normal wear, it stays charged just from daily use.

Does artificial light work?

Yes. Any light source works: LED lamps, fluorescent, halogen, even a phone screen (though very slow).

Can it overcharge?

No. They have a protection circuit that stops charging when the battery is full. You can leave it in the sun all day without issues.

How many years does the solar battery last?

Between 10 and 20 years, depending on use and quality. When it degrades, a watchmaker can replace it with a new one.
