Seiko Presage Cocktail Time: three cocktails, one idea called Mist

Emerald Mist · Mint Mist · Whisky Mist · A story that begins with ice

Three cocktails, three dials, one same idea. Seiko returns to the Cocktail Time collection with three new models that start from crushed ice as their point of departure. The HCB001J1, HCB002J1 and HCB003J1 do not try to represent a drink: they try to preserve its appearance.

Mist

This is not a catalogue, it is the story of an idea.

There are cocktails you recognise before you taste them. By their colour, by the way they are served, by the ice, by the glass, or simply by the impression they create when they appear on the bar.

That is precisely what makes the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time collection interesting. Its watches do not try to represent a drink literally. They start from something harder to convey: the appearance a cocktail has when you have it in front of you.

The story began in Tokyo, at STAR BAR, in Ginza, alongside the renowned bartender Hisashi Kishi. From that collaboration came one of the most recognisable families in Presage, in which different cocktails have become the starting point for designing dials.

Now Seiko returns to that idea with three new models: HCB001J1, HCB002J1 and HCB003J1. Emerald Mist, Mint Mist and Whisky Mist. Three different drinks and one same question: how do you turn what we see in a glass into a watch dial?

The key lies in one word: Mist

Why Mist? The three new models have something in common in their name. Emerald Mist. Mint Mist. Whisky Mist. And that word is more important than the name of each cocktail.

A Mist is served with crushed ice. The ice fills a good part of the glass, quickly cools its walls and makes condensation appear on the outside.

Key question: What do the three have in common? Not the colour, not the flavour, not the alcohol. The ice. And that is exactly what Seiko has brought to the dials.

The glass begins to cover itself with small droplets and the drink remains partially hidden among the ice. When light hits all of that, the way we see the cocktail changes.

That is the Mist.

From ice to dial

What exactly has Seiko done? The inspiration is not to draw a cocktail on the dial, but to bring to the watch what the three Mist have in common: the crushed ice and the way light reflects on it.

That is why texture is so important. The surface of the new dials recalls crushed ice and makes light behave differently depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

The colour is present, but it moves to the background.

What matters is what happens on top of it.

Three watches, one same idea

The HCB001J1 Emerald Mist, HCB002J1 Mint Mist and HCB003J1 Whisky Mist start from that same concept.

Emerald Mist, Mint Mist and Whisky Mist are different drinks, and each one brings its own tone. But the interesting thing appears when the three watches are placed together.

The texture of their dials belongs to one same family. In all three, the reference to crushed ice and to the reflections that light produces on an irregular surface is present.

But Seiko has not dressed them exactly the same.

The HCB001J1 Emerald Mist is the only one of the three that uses a steel bracelet. The HCB002J1 and HCB003J1 use a leather strap.

It is a simple change, but it considerably modifies the character of the watch. The steel makes the Emerald Mist look cleaner and more contemporary, while the leather brings the other two closer to the more classic side of Cocktail Time.

Thus, even starting from the same idea, each model finds its own way of bringing it to the wrist.

When the name stops being the important thing

Perhaps that is the best way to look at these new Cocktail Time.

If we remove the names —Emerald, Mint and Whisky— there is still something all three share. Mist.

Crushed ice. Condensation. Light. A surface that changes when you look at it from another angle.

Seiko has taken that small phenomenon that happens around a glass and turned it into the starting point for three new Presage dials.

It does not try to represent the cocktail. It tries to preserve its appearance.

In summary: Emerald Mist, Mint Mist and Whisky Mist are not three colour variations. They are three different cocktails that allow Seiko to explore one same idea from three points of departure. The blue of the Emerald. The green of the Mint. The warm tone of the Whisky. And in all three, that texture inspired by crushed ice that gives meaning to the surname Mist.
