One film, one wrist, one question. In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt wears a Citizen Bullhead from the 1970s. It is not just any watch: it is the one that turned a niche chronograph into a cult icon. This is its story.
BullheadThis is not an article about a film. It is the story of a watch that cinema put back on the map.
There are watches that appear in a film and go unnoticed. And there are others that, as soon as you see them on the protagonist's wrist, you need to know what they are. That is what happened with the Citizen Bullhead worn by Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
The scene is well known: Cliff Booth, the stunt double played by Brad Pitt, wears on his wrist a chronograph with a gold case, a panda dial and a wide leather strap that looks like it belongs to another era. And it does. The watch is a Citizen 8110 Bullhead, an automatic chronograph that Citizen launched in 1972.
What is interesting is not only that it appears in the film. It is that, following that appearance, the Bullhead went from being a collector's watch to a global object of desire. Prices rose, units began to run scarce and Citizen decided to bring the design back with a new line: the Tsuno Chrono.
This is the story of that watch. And of the two modern versions that can be found today at Joyería Pato.
The watch Brad Pitt wore was not a Tsuno Chrono. It was an original Citizen 8110 Bullhead, an automatic chronograph from the 1970s. The confusion is common, because the current Tsuno Chrono is a modern reissue inspired by that design. But they are two different watches, with different movements and decades apart.
The Citizen 8110 Bullhead is an automatic chronograph with the 8110A calibre, a movement with a flyback function (return to zero with a single pusher), 23 jewels and a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The case measures 38 mm, a size that in the 70s was considered generous and that today reads as contained.
Its name, "Bullhead", comes from the arrangement of the pushers: instead of being at the sides of the crown, they are on the top of the case, at 11 and 1 o'clock. That configuration gives it a profile reminiscent of a bull's horns, hence the nickname.
In addition to the case, Brad Pitt's Bullhead is recognisable by its strap. It is not a conventional strap: it is a "bund" strap, a wide leather piece that sits under the case and leaves the watch slightly raised on the wrist. That strap, combined with the gold case and the panda dial, is what gives the watch its look of an instrument from another era.
In the film, the strap is aged brown leather, and it has become part of the icon. So much so that there are enthusiasts who seek replicas of that strap to accompany their own Bullheads.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is set in 1969. But the Citizen 8110 was not launched until 1972. That is, the watch Brad Pitt wears did not exist at the date in which the film takes place. This prop "error" is a detail much discussed in watch forums, and far from detracting from it, it has reinforced the watch's cult status. Because what matters is not historical accuracy: it is that this watch, with that strap, on that wrist, is unforgettable.

What happened after the film? The vintage Bullhead took off. Collectors began to seek it, prices rose and Citizen, which had already relaunched the design in 2018, strengthened the line with new versions. Today, the Bullhead legacy is divided into two paths: the modern entry-level reissue (Tsuno Chrono) and the high-end reinterpretation (Promaster AV0104-06W).
The Citizen Tsuno Chrono is the current version of the Bullhead. It belongs to the Record Label line, which recovers designs from the Citizen archive and adapts them to today's materials and movements. It maintains the bullhead silhouette, with the pushers on the top of the case, but changes the movement: it is quartz (calibre 0510), not automatic. The case measures 38 mm and water resistance is 50 metres.
The current Tsuno Chrono maintains the bullhead silhouette in all its versions. The case is offered in two interpretations: a rounded one, closer to the profile of the 1970s Bullhead, and another with polygonal cuts, more contemporary in reading. Both variants can be seen in the collection.
It is the most direct way to carry the Bullhead legacy without turning to the vintage market. And it is the entry point to the collection for those seeking a chronograph with history, but with the reliability and maintenance of a current watch.
The full collection can be seen here: Citizen Tsuno Chrono.
At the other end is the Citizen AV0104-06W. It is not a Tsuno Chrono from the Record Label collection: it is a Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer, a limited edition of 5,000 units celebrating the 50th anniversary of Eco-Drive. It shares the bullhead silhouette and the cultural legacy of the 1970s Bullhead, but belongs to another collection and another league.
Its case measures 47 mm, the movement is Eco-Drive (calibre E210) -light-powered, no battery-, the crystal is sapphire and water resistance is 200 metres. It is the most contemporary and high-end interpretation of the icon. It is not Brad Pitt's watch, but it is the same heritage.
The AV0104-06W can be seen here: Citizen Promaster AV0104-06W.
The current Citizen Tsuno Chrono, from the Record Label collection: the modern reissue of the 1970s Bullhead. The same silhouette, the same legacy.
The current Citizen Tsuno Chrono Polygonal, from the Record Label collection: the most avant-garde reissue of the 1970s Bullhead. The same silhouette, the same legacy.
Brad Pitt wore a Citizen 8110 Bullhead, an automatic chronograph from the 1970s. It is a vintage watch, not a current model. Citizen relaunched it years later with the Tsuno Chrono line.
No. Brad Pitt's watch is an original 1970s Bullhead, automatic and with the 8110A calibre. The Tsuno Chrono is a modern reissue inspired by that design, but with a quartz movement (calibre 0510) and a 38 mm case. They share the silhouette, not the mechanism.
Because the film is set in 1969 and the Citizen 8110 was not launched until 1972. It is a prop "error" that fans have turned into a cult detail. Far from detracting from it, it has reinforced the watch's status as an icon.
The original vintage Bullhead is only found on the collectors' market (auctions, specialist forums, vintage shops). The modern versions inspired by it are available at Joyería Pato: the Tsuno Chrono (entry range) and the Promaster AV0104-06W (high end).
The original strap from the film is a wide leather piece that sits under the case. It is not a standard strap and is not available as an official accessory. However, there are artisan strap makers who offer replicas of that "bund" style for 38-40 mm watches.
In summary: the Citizen Bullhead that Brad Pitt wore in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is an automatic 8110 from the 70s. It is not a Tsuno Chrono, but it is the origin of everything. Today, that legacy lives on in two versions: the quartz Tsuno Chrono (entry range, 38 mm) and the Promaster AV0104-06W (high end, Eco-Drive, 47 mm, limited edition). Three watches, three eras, one same silhouette: that of the Bullhead.
