The toughness of a G-Shock in a more compact format
The feminine version of Casio's toughness
Baby-G was launched in 1994 as a response to a gap in the market: many women wanted the toughness of a G-Shock, but the available sizes and styles didn't fit their wrists or their tastes. Casio took the G-Shock foundation — shock resistance, 100 metres of water resistance — and adapted it to a smaller format, with more varied colours and a design made with them in mind.
The name comes from the letter "G" of G-Shock and "Baby", an affectionate term in rock culture for referring to someone dear. Since then, Baby-G has established itself as a line with its own identity within Casio's catalogue.

A compact format with a variety of styles
Baby-G shares with G-Shock the shock-resistant structure and a water resistance of at least 100 metres across all models. The difference is in the dimensions: the case is smaller and the lines are softer, which makes the watch fit better on slimmer wrists.
From there, the variety is enormous. There are digital, analogue and mixed models, with colours ranging from neutral tones to more striking combinations. Some versions also include features such as world time, chronograph, timer or LED lighting, depending on the model.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is a Baby-G compared to a G-Shock?
The difference is noticeable, especially on slim wrists. The case of a Baby-G is several millimetres narrower and less tall than that of an equivalent G-Shock, and it also weighs less. That makes it sit closer to the wrist and go more unnoticed. If you come from a G-Shock and find it too big, a Baby-G in the same style fits better without losing the toughness.
Do all Baby-G watches handle water the same way?
Most Baby-G watches have 100 metres of water resistance, which covers daily use, showers, swimming and light water sports. Some specific models go up to 200 metres, the same level as many G-Shocks. If you're going to swim frequently, it's worth checking that figure before choosing.
Do Baby-G watches run on a battery or solar power?
It depends on the model. Most use a button battery, which usually lasts between two and three years. But some Baby-G watches include Tough Solar, Casio's solar charging system, which removes the need to change it. If you'd rather forget about that maintenance, it's worth looking for one with that technology.
Can you wear a Baby-G for sport?
Yes. Baby-G is designed to withstand impacts and vibrations, so it's suitable for sport, outdoor activities and daily use. The 100-metre water resistance lets you wear it in the shower, swimming on the surface or doing light water sports. It isn't designed for scuba diving.
What's the difference between a digital and an analogue Baby-G?
Mainly how you read the time. Digital models show information directly and usually include more features visible at a glance. Analogue and mixed models combine the classic hands reading with extra information on screen. Neither is better than the other: it depends on what you find more comfortable and the style you're after.
