SPB185J1: Reinterpretation Seiko Hi-Beat Diver 300 m 1968

The Seiko SPB185J1, also known as the Hi-Beat Diver 300 m Reinterpretation from 1968. This model was used for the first ascent from Japan to Mount Everest and is inspired by the 300 m Seiko Diver from 1968, which had the highest hi-beat caliber of world standards.

Design

It has been modernized compared to the original version with a smaller case size: from 44 mm to 42 mm, and a high-visibility dial design. The case thickness is 12.5 mm, and it has a lug-to-lug size of 20 mm. In addition to the caliber change and resizing of the piece, there is also the added improvement of the nomenclature that Seiko adds to many of its watches (Prospex), which means (professional specifications). This translates to Robustness, Precision, Functionality, and Adventure.

Functions

Beyond its appearance, the Seiko SPB185J1 impresses with its automatic movement and the 6R35 caliber used with 24 jewels. With an estimated variation by the manufacturer of -15 +25 seconds per day. This mechanical precision is complemented by a day indicator and a manual winding capability, offering not only beauty but also exceptional functionality, and finally, its power reserve which is no less than 70 hours. Additionally, its unidirectional bezel completes this piece.

Details

The hands feature a sword model with a LumiBrite-coated tip, while the end of the second hand has two columns with one column filled with LumiBrite and the other column in red, which helps with visibility in dark conditions. Not only on the hands, but LumiBrite is also on the indices and the bezel. With a curved sapphire crystal resistant to scratches, along with its water resistance of 20 bar (200 m), it obtains the ISO 6425 certification thanks to this resistance. Finally, the stainless steel bracelet has a triple folding clasp with a safety lock and an extension button perfect for wearing over a diving suit.

The most important thing about an automatic watch

Automatic watches, also known as automatic mechanical watches, are a fascinating piece of engineering that combines precision, elegance and tradition. Unlike battery-powered quartz watches, automatic watches do not require an external power source (battery) to operate.

1. The heart of the watch: The Caliber

The fundamental element of an automatic watch is its caliber, a complex mechanism made up of hundreds of tiny parts that work together in a synchronized manner. The heart of the caliber is the escapement, which regulates the release of energy from the mainspring to drive the watch's hands.

2. The power of automatic movement

The magic of automatic watches lies in converting movement into energy. A heavy rotor, or oscillating mass, rotates inside the watch thanks to the movement of the wearer's arm, transmitting this movement to the winding mechanism, which tensions the mainspring. The energy stored in the spring is gradually released, allowing the watch to run.

3. Accuracy and reliability

High-quality automatic watches are known for their precision and reliability. With proper care, an automatic watch can run for decades without requiring extensive maintenance.

4. A miniature work of art

Beyond their functionality, automatic watches are considered miniature works of art. The complexity of their mechanism, the quality of their materials and the beauty of their design make them coveted pieces by collectors and watch lovers.

5. A legacy of tradition

Automatic watches have a rich history dating back centuries. Its evolution has been marked by innovation and the constant search for perfection.
